The big huge websites have a lot of authority because they are continually growing the size of their websites and some at even alarming rates. As these big companies grow the search engine crawlers must continue to be on their site so they can have updated information on them.

To understand this concept you have to think the way a search engine does. A search engine wants to continually have the most updated and complete information on the web that it can have. The more quality information in its index the better there services.

The way they go about this is by having technology crawl the web and index information. The more you feed it the more it wants to come back and the more trustworthy you look.

So how do you get a search engine crawler to continually come back to your website, you invite him. Crawlers find sites through various ways. The best way is by links that point back to your site. It is best to have links on sites that are busy.

Social networks and social bookmarking sites are really busy and the crawlers are constantly in them gathering data. Ping services are constantly being crawled as well as the search engines use them to find updated information.

A perfect example of this is Technorati.com. Technorati is like a search engine but it indexes blog posts. Blogs are becoming very valuable as they let people add information to the web in a streamless manner allowing for information to be added to the web at alarming rates.

When you post a blog article you can use pinging services to let the internet world that you have updated your blog with new content. These ping services get your content out there to readers who are looking for updated information and this is where search engine crawlers love to crawl as well.

Bottom line the more activity that is going on a website the more a search engine wants to know about it. Using ping services, news articles, press releases, article directories, social networks, social bookmarking, and content network sites are just some of the ways search engines can find new information and index it.

As you build an online business your primary goal is to think about how to get the search engines to constantly be on your site. Inviting search engines to come to your site is vital to your success online.

There are a lot of factors that can make a website not load fast and the first culprit a lot of times is images. Large image files can dramatically increase the load time. So you will want to look at your image file sizes and compress what you can.

Another is any type of flash pieces that are on the website. The more flash pieces you have the more it will slow down the load time. All flash sites are not search engine friendly because the spiders cannot see the code. If you do have html sites with some flash then you will want to make them load as fast as possible.

If you run a WordPress website and have some plugins then there are some that will slow the load time so it is imperative to make sure that you only use ones that you feel are the most important to your website.

There are several tools that you can use to see how fast a website is loading. You can go to any search engine and type in website speed tools.

I like to use YSlow which is a Firefox addon. This addon will show you how long it took for that webpage to load and give it a grade like your webpage is in school. It will grade on different factors that it determines the best practices for search engine friendly pages.

This addon goes with another addon called Firebug which is web developer addon in Firefox. You must first download firebug first and then download YSlow. You can set different parameters on YSlow to have it run when you want it to manually or you can set it to autorun which will run everytime you pull up a webpage.

It installs in the status bar along with firebug. When you pull it up it will show you different things you can do to increase your load time. Here is where you can download YSlow.

If you have definitions of acronyms that are in your industry then it will help your visitors as they can see what you are talking about. You can link an acronym to the glossary so they can see what the term actually is. Remember that frustrated visitors are gone visitors to no more return.

To search engines they love glossary’s and definitions because to them it provides highly useful relevant content. They see glossary’s on websites in high favor and love to see them.

When building a glossary you want to make it easy to navigate. You might want to list in alphabetical order. After each term and definiton you want to make a link so the user can go back to the beginning of the glossary. Try not to have long pages. 10-15 terms plus their definition is good. If you have more then it will just add in how many pages you have on your site.

The glossary will have highly relevant links as you link to it throughout your site as a reference plus there will be others in your industry who might link to it. A glossary is a great link target.

So to increase your love from the search engines try to provide useful content and use a glossary to increase your authority.

The best way to start to build your authority for something is to have content on many different topics that fit within the umbrella of the major keyword. The more information you have about something the more of an authority you look like to the search engines.

Lets say for example you are talking about trucks which is a major keyword, you would like to have content that talks about all different things that have to do with trucks. You could have information on how to change a truck tire, information on truck seats, truck lifts, truck bedliners, truck towing packages, truck paint, truck mud flaps, truck engines, truck transmissions, and more.

The more information you provide about anything having to do with trucks the more authority the site will get for the keyword authority.

Search engines know how to relate information and in this instance would be able to detect that all of these different articles of information would increase the authority for the term trucks. So if you were trying to get your site listed in the search results for the keyword trucks you would have a better chance if you had information on many different topics about trucks than not.

As the search engine looks at your site it will rank you higher in the search results for these individual articles that have long keyword phrases but it will also increase the power and authority of the major keyword trucks.

So if you are looking to get into the top spots for a major keyword and want to have that authority start thinking about what type of informaiton surrounds that word or topic and write information about it. As you do this you will be able to broaden your keyword authority for the almighty tier 1 keyword phrase that you want to rank well.

is a name that everyone in the world has in their vocabulary. If you have not heard of Google then you have been living under a big huge rock for the last decade. Google has put up a website time-line showing their accomplishments and what they have done in the past 10 years.

When Larry Page and Sergey Brin first met Larry was a 24 year old grad student from the University of Michigan and was considering going to Stanford. Sergey was 23 and assigned to show Larry around campus. As computer scientist they created a search engine called Backrub and operated on the Stanford servers for more than a year.

After a while they decided that Backrub needed a name change and they went with Google which was a name play on the word “googol” which is a math term for a 1 with 100 zeros after it. They decided to go with Google as it represents an infinite number as their goal was to organize an infinite amount of information on the web.

Google.com was originally registered on September 15, 1998 making the company now in the double digits for age. Man has time flied since then as Google has made some big changes in peoples lives. Some would say for good while others might say for the bad.

As Google has increased in technology and size they have continued to make updates to the way they organize information on the web. Webmasters have continually had to learn more about the way Google operates and organizes information in their index.

Today there are several webmasters who focus on trying to get their websites listed high in the most dominant search engine in the world. As they have made updates to their algorithm some webmasters sites have flourished while others have dropped.

No matter who you are or what you use the internet for the word Google has many meanings. They have done such a good job for organizing information on the web that often when people are looking to find things they say “just Google it” instead of look it up in a search engine.

Google has made very minor changes to their homepage, and still operate today with the same mentality that both Larry and Sergey had back in 1995 when they started what would be a huge company that would change the world.

The search engines exist to help people find the most important information for any particular word. If you type in computers then the search engine will pull back what it feels is the most relevant and informative material for the end user.

Google is the top search engine in the world. So the question is how do these search engines work. They have what is called algorithms and these algorithms are created by computer engineers. The whole goal of algorithms is to properly index information into the search engine.

So the search engine has information stored like a bank stores money. So the first key to seo is getting a website listed properly in the search engines index. Simply put this means that every webpage is indexed, not just websites. So every page of your site can be indexed. So you name the page exactly what the page is about. You do this by the meta data.

Next is how much is your company growing? Is the site continually adding information that is useful to users. Next is how big is your company and how many people like you. This is just like any offline business. The bigger you are and more reputable (popular) your company is the easier it is to send your friends to that company.

The same goes for search engines. They want to list companies that have a good solid reputation with good information. That is seo in the dumb version.

So try not to get hug up on all of the details of confusing things. Always go back to the basis and ask yourself:

Is our company the most informational, relevant , and popular company for this keyword that is typed into a search engine?

Keep in mind that Google’s algorithm is the most advanced and are much further ahead in determining this information listed above. Keep to the basics or as they like to say in sports (stick with the fundamentals).

The first thing I do is go to Yahoo Site Explorer as Yahoo provides the most comprehensive information about inbound links. Google does not show all of the links that they actually know about that point to a website. To see what the independent search engines are reporting for links you can type in:

link:http://www.thewebsite.com

This will show you what links are pointing to the website that are being reported by that search engine. As you go through Yahoo Site Explorer you will be able to see links that are pointing to a webpage or the whole website. This will give you a good analysis of who is linking to you.

Another tool that is good to use is Backlink Analyzer that is provided by Aaron Wall with Seobook. This tool will analyze the anchor text that is being used in the links. You can see a video of it in action by Aaron Wall and download it from his website.

It will also show you the deep link percentage and the different types of links that are pointing into a site. There are other link analysis tools out there but these are the ones that most seo professionals use unless they are using a seo software tool.

A good place to start when you are analyzing links is the amount of links, the pagerank of the sites, and the anchor text of the links. This will give you a good idea of what you should start to work on.

Then analyzing your competitors inbound links will show you websites that you could receive inbound links from. If your competitors are getting a link then more than likely you could be able to get a link from them as well.

Always remember when it comes to inbound links it is not just the quantity of links that matter, it is the quality. Having higher quality inbound links is much more useful and effective.

These h tags start at <h1> and go down <h2>, <h3>, etc. So on a website these are the main heading when you start a page and then headers for subsequent paragraphs of information. The <h1> tag is used only once at the top of a page. The lower the number the higher the weight of the information.

So for example if you have an h1 tag it shows more importance to the search engine than a h2 tag. Google has said that it is better to build a website with a heirarchy of information. The better the content is organized the easier it is for a reader and a search engine.

There is only one h1 tag per page. The h1 tag is at the top and tells what the page is about, not the site. It is also a good idea to put your keyword in the h tags if you are targeting that page for a certain keyword. Try to place the h1 tag as close to the top as possible.

The h2 tags are under the h1 tags and the h3 tags are under the h2 tags. The header tags should make a website more structural and the outline of information better.

So on a page you will start with h1 tag and then work your way down. Here is an example:

If the relation proportion is high for a selected term used in the anchor text then the search engines see it as a sign of unnatural. This means that the anchor text pointing back to a site is all one word then that shows unnatural proportion to the way a website receives natural inbound links.Therefore it is critical to not have one keyword excessively used as anchor text pointing back to a website.

Also it is very good to have backlinks point back to other pages of the site other than the home page. This will improve the deep link ratio. The higher the deep link ratio the more it will look natural as people link to pages that they like. Sometimes that is not the home page of a website.

From experience I know it is very important to not be over aggressive for a keyword. After completely going after a keyword and not mixing up my backlink anchor text Google pushed me back in the results.

To get yourself out of situations like this you will want to mix up the words that point back to your website. Also it will be very important to look more natural as you try to get yourself out of this hole. Remember to use your keyword clusters and also use a variety of different websites to build links.

It will be best to use a combination of different methods to build your links like directories, blogs, articles, press releases, video, social networks and other ways of building inbound links. This will show more natural progression of a website.

This will help you if you are trying to hard of going after one keyword phrase. So as you are building your websites growth remember to not try to solely go after one word like a laser or you will be flagged by the search engines.
