I see this all the time when I go to a website and I get thinking, does this site engage me and make me want to continue to browse through the tabs. Every visitor is always thinking, is this a site that I want to be on? Is there any cool information? Is there anything here that entertains me?

As a website owner you must continually be thinking about how your website engages people. It is no different than a brick and mortar store that invites people into its doors. They have to continually move stuff around to attract customers the way they want to.

The same goes for a website, you must show visitors what you want to show visitors. Help them feel like they are welcomed and that they are in the right place for finding exactly what they need for whatever you are offering.

In search engine optimization the ultimate goal is to look as the dominant authority in whatever field you are targeting and this is done by keywords that people type into the search engines. There are only 10 spots on the first page of any search engine so that does not make a lot of room for those who want to be at the top.

A crucial factor in having a website listed is when people click on the listing and get to the site do they want to stay on the site or leave. This is what I mean by engaging the visitor to the site.

As soon as a visitor enters the site do they feel welcomed or is it one of those stores that you walk in and right back out of. As an internet business owner you must continually be thinking about how you are welcoming your visitors and portraying your message.

So the design of a website is critical in how you display information. There are some crucial things you can do to decrease the amount of time it takes for an individual to find information and more importantly the information that you want them to find.

Titles and headlines are a must in drawing attention. Titles are normally at the top of a page and have bigger font. A clear concise title that draws attention and that picques curiosity is the best.

Indented information underneath the title that supports the what the title is talking about is a perfect way to show contrast in the way it is laid out. The biggest thing in drawing the eye is contrast. The human eye is phenomenal in picking out contrast.

This is why on search engine results pages the indented results get clicked on twice as much as the one above it because it has contrasts and sticks out.

Having chunked information that is on topic also will draw the eye as the eye will focus on a small area in great detail. Having content in box like form is perfect as the eye can focus on those boxes. Far to many people who are new to writing content for the web write long sentences and paragraphs that join together.

No matter how good the information is the eye will just see a bunch of stuff together and will not want to decipher the information.

So in designing websites make sure your layout is easy with chunked information and easy colors. Use contrast to draw the eye like change in font size, color, and placement. The less the eye has to travel to find good data the more it will stay on the page.

Make your website dumb friendly to the eye so it does not have to decipher a code. Your website should not be a puzzle that the eye has to think about where to go or what something is.

Vegas Web Design is a good example of having chunked information that is easy to follow and allows for the eye to find information very fast.

The best way to start to make a site with easier usability is in the navigation tabs. Navigation and organization is very important to search engines as well. They like good content organization with pages and sub-pages that have their own categories. Having a good structure is having main categories and then having sub-categories underneath the main categories.

This type of layout will help a user know and guide them through what categories they want to look at. Using simple easy words will ease the use as a visitor will not have to think what the words and sections mean. Do not ever use jargon that is related to your specific industry. Visitors to your website will not know what you are talking about so it is vital to put it in laman’s terms.

Have you ever been to a doctor and they use terms that you have no idea what they are saying and you are like, can you put that so I would understand? The same goes for people who are browsing your website. They do not have the knowledge to understand your industry like you do. So never use complicated text. It may look like you know what you are talking about, but if you overdo it then you will lose your visitors and readers.

I always say that we want to make a site dumb-friendly or stupid-friendly. What does that mean, it means that we want to make the site so easy to use that anyone on the site does not have to think about where to go or what to do. If your site is dumb-friendly then you will have higher results.

In the SEO area it will help to decrease bounce rates as internet users will stay on the site longer instead of getting frustrated and leaving.

Overall it comes down to the visitor’s experience. The difference between a well designed website and one that is not is the that a well designed website makes the visitors experience as pleasant as possible.
